Regions and nations
Disposable income is what households have left to spend or save after taxes and benefits. ONS prints it per head of everyone who lives in an area. The cash figures are at the prices of each year.
ONS also prints a real-terms figure, with rising prices taken out, in 2023 money. It does this only for regions and nations, and the series starts in 2009. The two series are shown side by side and never set against each other.
Of England's nine regions, London had the highest income per head after rising prices in 2024, £35,150, and the North East the lowest, £19,928. The same two regions were highest and lowest in cash, £36,487 and £20,562.

What each nation's total is made of
ONS prints the parts of each nation's total household income beside it. The balance of secondary income is what households receive in transfers less the taxes and contributions they pay, so it is below zero where they pay more.

Cash, at the prices of each year · Office for National Statistics, Regional gross disposable household income: local authorities by ITL1 region, 1997 to 2024 (Table 3) · Released: 19 August 2026
What this doesn't tell you
- Income per head is an area's total spread over everyone who lives there, so it cannot show how income is shared out.
- The cash figures are at each year's prices, so 2008 and 2024 are not in the same money.
- ONS takes rising prices out only for regions and nations, so no council has a real-terms figure.
- ONS calls these official statistics in development; its own words are in the sources below.
- Barnsley and Sheffield are printed on their boundaries before April 2025, so they are not drawn on the council map.
- This note prints the August 2026 editions. A later edition may revise a figure; that would be a new note.
- Northern Ireland is in ONS's tables but not on this page.
How we worked this out
Every figure on this page is one ONS printed, read from the files named below and checked against the cell it sits in. We do no arithmetic on them.
