What the UK produces, industry by industry and region by region

ONS’s monthly figures to July 2026: how fast each industry grew, how much each added to growth, and what businesses invested and traded. Then where output comes from now, region by region.

Main points

  • ONS’s monthly estimate of the UK’s output changed by +0.4% in July 2026, +0.4% over the three months to July 2026 and +1.6% on July 2025 (published 11 September 2026).
  • Over the three months to July 2026, ONS’s growth rate was +0.6% for services, −0.5% for production and −0.5% for construction.
  • ONS’s business investment bulletin, published 30 September 2026: “UK business investment increased by 1.8% in Quarter 2 (Apr to June) 2026 and is 5.2% above where it was in the same quarter a year ago.”
  • The Scottish Government’s first estimate of growth in Scotland’s onshore GDP was +0.7% in 2026 Q2 on the previous quarter (published 26 August 2026).
  • ONS’s quarterly figures for the English regions and Wales are official statistics in development. They reach 2025 Q3, in pounds million at current prices, with no growth rate (published 31 July 2026).
  • GDP per head at current market prices was £42,171 in England, £39,441 in Scotland and £31,484 in Wales in 2024; in 2019 it was £34,392 in England (ONS, Table 7, published 23 September 2026).

I · The latest month

ONS estimates the output of the whole UK every month. It prints three growth rates for each industry: on the previous month, over three months, and on a year earlier. This chapter prints them for July 2026.

Every panel shares one value scale, 51.6 to 115.3.

Each row in the table prints ONS’s growth on the previous month, over the three months to July 2026 against the three before, and on July 2025, each to one decimal place as ONS prints it. The chart is ONS’s index, index, 2023 = 100: a rise means more was produced, with price changes taken out. All four lines open on one scale; switch to each panel’s own scale to see smaller movements.

II · Where growth is

ONS splits each month’s growth into the part each industry contributed, in . Each row is an industry and each column a month. The top row is ONS’s growth for all industries.

Over the three months to July 2026, services contributed +0.48 points, production −0.06 and construction −0.03. ONS’s growth for all industries was +0.4%. The two sections contributing most were Professional, scientific and technical activities (M), at +0.18 points, and Information and communication (J), at +0.17.

ONS prints agriculture, production, construction and services, and the sections inside production and services. It prints each contribution to two decimal places and its overall growth to one, so the columns do not always meet the marker. ONS’s note: “Estimates cannot be regarded as accurate to the last digit shown.” Click a month to sort its contributions; open production or services to see its sections. ONS prints nothing finer than a section, so agriculture and construction do not open.

Over the three months to July 2026, Information and communication (J) grew fastest of ONS’s twenty sections, by +2.5%. Water supply, sewerage etc (E) had the lowest rate, −4.0%. All industries together grew by +0.4%.

ONS publishes its split by asset on a different day from the headline series, and it reaches one quarter earlier. Each row is ONS’s level, then its growth on the previous quarter and on the same quarter a year earlier. Each asset opens on its own scale, so compare shapes, not heights. V · The quarterly pulse, two publishers

ONS publishes quarterly figures for the English regions and Wales. The Scottish Government publishes its own for Scotland. They measure different things, so they sit in two panels under one quarter slider and are never added up or ranked together.

Official statistics in development. “These estimates are published as official statistics in development.” Office for National Statistics (workbook cover sheet, Publication Status). Read the statement.

2025 Q3

ONS’s Table 1 is headed “Gross Value Added (GVA) at current prices, pounds million, seasonally adjusted”. It prints no growth rate and no figure with price changes taken out, so a rise in an ONS panel includes rising prices; each ONS panel has its own scale. The Scottish Government prints growth with price changes taken out. Its note: “All statistics in this release are for Scotland’s onshore economy, which excludes any extra-regio activity.” A quarter a publisher has not printed is left as a gap.

VI · Each region’s mix of industries

One tile for each English region, Wales and Scotland. Inside each tile, every industry is a rectangle sized by ONS’s figure for 2024. Pick an industry to see it in every tile, or open a tile.

In 2024, real estate activities was the largest industry by output in North East, North West, Yorkshire and The Humber, West Midlands, East, South East, South West and Scotland. Manufacturing was largest in East Midlands (£20,339m) and Wales (£12,744m). Financial and insurance activities was largest in London (£105,232m). ONS’s UK figure for real estate activities was £377,538m, at current prices.

Output by industry, 2024, £ million at current prices

ONS’s Table 1c prints twenty industry sections for each area, in the pounds of 2024. A rectangle’s size follows ONS’s figure; no share or percentage is printed. The all-industries figure in the table is ONS’s own total, not the rectangles added up, and ONS notes: “Components may not sum to totals as a result of rounding.” Tiles are placed roughly where each area lies, not to scale. This yearly table ends earlier than the monthly figures above.

Output per person in every region and nation over ten years, and who grew, is its own piece: Ten years of the UK’s regional economy.

What this doesn't tell you

  • Output is what the economy produces. It says nothing about prices, wellbeing or public spending.
  • ONS’s monthly figures are first estimates and are often revised; ONS’s note says they are not accurate to the last digit.
  • ONS’s quarterly regional figures include rising prices and are still in development. Scotland’s growth rates come from another publisher, measured another way, and are never set on one scale with them.
  • The industry mix is for 2024, the latest year ONS has published by region; it ends well before the monthly figures.
  • Northern Ireland is not covered by the regional figures here.

How we worked this out

Every figure on this page is one its publisher printed, read from the file named below at the position recorded for it. We work out no rate, share or change of our own here. Where the page says one figure is largest, that is an ordering of the publisher’s figures, nothing added.
